“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” ― Thomas Edison

When we hit 40, it gets harder to stay in shape. During the past month, I’ve periodically felt discouraged by the effort I’ve been putting into my health and fitness- without my TYPICAL results.

At my lowest points, I’ve thought to myself: “I’m almost 41. That’s what’s causing this.”

I see SO MANY others in their 40’s (and beyond) who complain about the SAME THING.

It’s easy for us to say:
😡My metabolism has slowed down.
😡No matter what I do, nothing works.
😡I’ve been SO disciplined and well-behaved, and nothing has changed.
😡I can’t work out the same way I used to.
😡I’m older now. This happens to everyone. It’s impossible.

And then, use those excuses as crutches for why we can’t, won’t, or don’t make progress.

But here’s the deal: our success in life does NOT come from focusing on the things we CAN’T control. It comes from focusing on the things we CAN control.

❌ Can I control my age? No.
❌Can I control a slowdown in my metabolic rate? No.
❌Can I control that it’s getting harder? Nope.

So what CAN I control? SO MUCH.

✔ I can control what I eat.
✔I can control how much water I drink.
✔I can control how often or how hard I work out.
✔I can control what KIND of workouts I do.
✔I can control how many rest days I take.
✔I can control what research I do over how my strategies might need to CHANGE a bit now that I’m older.
✔I can control what kind of outside help I enlist (a coach, trainer, nutritionist).

No MATTER what you’re struggling with in life, do NOT get wrapped up in thinking about things you can’t control. Figure out what you CAN control. And do THOSE things.

And, if you’re thinking about quitting or giving up, just because it’s hard or you’ve been at it for awhile, DON’T. Enlist some PDCA and figure out if you need to course-correct or change some part of your activities or strategies.

Often, when we think about quitting the most, that’s the time we most need to REMAIN committed.
