I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but I know some of you do.

Have you ever felt frustrated or sad when someone doesn’t RESPOND to you the way you want them to? Or the way you expected them to?

I see this happen ALL THE TIME for most of us.

Whether you shared good news (expecting congratulations), bad news (expecting comfort), or simply did something nice for someone (expecting credit), and didn’t get what you wanted, it’s very easy for our ego to “get in the way” and send us a message that this is unfair, unkind, unsupportive, and flat-out wrong.

That’s nonsense!

Remember this- it’s no one’s job, but your OWN- to make you feel good. It’s not their job. It’s YOUR job.

How much time do we spend- whining, storming, raging, complaining, moping, stewing- when people don’t meet our expectations and act the way we want them to? WAY too MUCH! In some cases- we never even told the other person what expectations we had.

Inner peace is exactly what it says: it’s INNER. Meaning- it comes from within.

Self-worth is exactly what is says: SELF. Meaning- it comes from oneself.

Not others. Today’s Monday, and it’s the start to another week. You can choose to be productive, happy, calm and at peace- and not needing anything from anyone else- or not. But I guarantee you, that if you choose to focus on your own self-worth, and your own contributions- you are GOING to have a better, more powerful, and more productive week. Try it.

Disclaimer: If you’re in a close relationship with a loved one- and you’re constantly hurt by their behaviors- I’m by no means advocating that you never speak up and clearly set expectations for what would help you have a much better relationship with them, in the future. Of course you should do that! That’s basic-line ‘Speed of Trust’ behaviors (and some of my favorite Speed of Trust behaviors too- talking straight, creating transparency, and clarifying expectations).

But expecting every acquaintance, stranger, colleague at work to respond to every statement and sentence in exactly the way we want- meeting our every move, exactly where we want- is something wholly different. Focus on you this week, and make a great week.
