Who knows what a GROWTH versus FIXED mindset is?

Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset, changed my entire life. When I read it in early 2016, I realized that I had been living my entire life with a fixed mindset- and how MUCH that had HELD ME BACK- in life.

From outside appearances- I was doing well. I had gone to Notre Dame for undergraduate work, gotten an MBA at USC, and had been working in Regional Director and District Manager roles since I was 29- leading hundreds of people. I lived in a large luxury apartment in downtown Long Beach, drove the car I wanted, exercised almost daily, and made time for plenty of travel. I was relatively happy. (Or, so I thought).

But when my boyfriend abruptly dumped me, out of the blue, I fell apart. I was determined to understand WHY the relationship had REALLY ended. When most of us go through breakups (whether they’re professional or personal ones!), we often try to figure out how it was NOT our fault. We, as humans, like to protect ourselves, so we often subconsciously cast blame outside ourselves: it was our partner’s fault, our friend’s fault, our mother’s fault, our boss’s fault- the company’s fault.

In this instance, as I picked up the pieces of that relationship, I decided that I wanted to know how it was MY fault; what I could’ve done better, and “Mindset” was the first book I read. Learning to recognize and spot ourselves- truly- is one of of the most amazing skills we can develop in life, and it takes a lot of patience, hard work, and HUMILITY to do it.

Carol Dweck estimates that as much as 50% of the population is living with a fixed mindset. (I tend to think it’s more). What we both agree on, however, is that people with a FIXED mindset will struggle more in life. They don’t take on failure and mistakes as easily. They shy away from things they’re not naturally good at. They get bent out of shape more easily. They don’t view challenges as a tool for growth and learning.

If you’re in this camp, I GUARANTEE you it’s affecting your ability to move forward at wok AND at home. If you’d like to discuss the material contained in this video, I’d be happy to schedule a call to do so- I’m super passionate about this research. Having a GROWTH mindset can change EVERYTHING for you.
